Duro Olowu

Duro Olowu who was named the winner of Best New Designer of the year at the British Fashion Awards in 2005, has become the latest designer to introduce a “signature” dress the hobo, which comes in bright colours hipple patterns and with a high waist. The British designer, is also a trained lawyer, whose father is a Nigerian and mother Jamaican, launched his label only 12 months before taking to the stage to collect his award from Laura Bailey.

First discovered by
Vogue's Sally Singer and Julie Gilhart, of Barneys, Olowu is known for stunning fluid dresses, made from vintage fabrics that he finds all over the world as well as new prints that he's been designing himself, and incredibly desirable one-off, vintage-inspired accessories. "I like to make clothes for women to feel good about themselves," he goes on. "And that they don't feel they'll see everywhere." With a less-is-more philosophy and an admiration for Alber Elbaz ("because it's evident from his designs that he likes women"), Olowu, who formerly designed clothes for the boutique on Ledbury Road that he owned with his ex-wife, hopes one day to show on the catwalk - but for now is determinedly staying true to his design philosophy. "Good tailoring is very important to me," he says. "It is the basis of even the most fluid dress."

Indeed! I love the mix colour on the prints, very appealing, take a look!

"I think fashion should be joyful – it shouldn't dictate to women but it should invite them into the fantasy of the designer who is making them," says Duro.

Kipepeo

I came across these classic pieces of Kipepeo Jewelry, designed by Kenyan born Carol Karungari Muthiga. She draws inspiration from her birth town in Kenya as well as from all her travels around the world. Her intricate filigree earrings, striking beaded necklaces, gilded pendants, and Lucite bangles have adorned celebrities like Halle Berry, Nelly Furtado, Aisha Tyler, Jennifer Lopez, Eva Longoria, Cameron Diaz, Nicole Richie and many more.

Kipepeo , Kiswahili for butterfly, embraces the notion of freedom and self-expression through fashion. Drawing inspiration from various sources including her Kenyan heritage, extensive travels, nature, seventies fashion, and the Victorian era, Muthiga creates bold, beautiful jewelry that would be the perfect addition to any collection.

The beauty of Kipepeo lies in the versatility with which the designs can be worn. Most of the pieces are casual enough for a fierce everyday look and elegant enough to transition into a look that’s simply stunning for an evening out on the town.

Take a look!

Jamelia goes naked in London Fashion Week on anti-Fur blitz

Jamelia will be turning heads and raising eyebrows during London Fashion Week - not because of what she's wearing, but because of what she isn't.

Nude and with a rabbit perched contentedly on her back, the R&B superstar - who is nominated for "Best British Female Solo Artist" in the Brit Awards, strikes a sexy pose for PETA's iconic "Rather Go Naked Than Wear Fur" ad campaign and asks her fans to "Be comfortable in your own skin, and let the animals keep theirs". "The reason I decided to bare all for PETA was because I was educated about the inhumane ways animals used for their fur are treated, and I think it's disgusting", says Jamelia. "I think if you have a heart, then you just wouldn't wear fur."

Jamelia is the latest celebrity to bare all in PETA's "Rather Go Naked" ad series, which has also featured Pamela Anderson, Kim Basinger and Christy Turlington.

Fashion in Africa

The launch of the Fashion in Africa (FIA) project on the 5th May 2006 was a huge success. The pilot project set the stage for other African countries to join South Africa and Tunisia in their quest to promote African fashion and culture collectively to the rest of the continent and the globe.

The first-ever Fashion in Africa event was a joint venture between the Tshwane Municipality (Pretoria, South Africa) and the Tunisian Embassy. The ultimate aim with the project is to create awareness of African fashion and culture. The Fashion In Africa project is about celebrating, showcasing and assisting in developing the whole African fashion and textile industry, as well as its cultural diversity, and demonstrating its inherent strength. It envisages the rise to fashion-related business opportunities for all stake holders in the fashion industry, hence create opportunities for other African countries to trade with each other, to the benefit of Africa as a whole as well as the internationally.
