South Africa Fashion

The fashion landscape of South Africa stages two world-class fashion weeks, events that filled a long standing gap in the fashion calendar for an Autmn/Winter fashion week to bring South Africa in line with the international fashion calendar. The events took place in March 2007 under the title: Cape Town Fashion and Jo’burg Fashion Week. The two new dates on the fashion calendar compliment the three major Spring/Summer fashion weeks that take place annually between June and July.

"This is the most significant move in African fashion in the last decade; and represents a major leap forward for our designers. The launch of these events allows our designers to now compete internationally in both fashion seasons”. said Paul Jackson, Managing Director of Leisureworx.

This is the first major step towards a Pan-African fashion series involving partner events from across the continent.

WeK1933

Alec Wek

Alek’s first line, WEK1933, appeared in stores in October 2001 and consisted of 23 pieces in various shades and textures to compliment any occasion. Vivid recollections of her beloved late father’s handsome briefcase inspired the line. Alek integrated his influences into the collection as well as her brand: WEK1933, which ties together the family name with the year of her father’s birth. The unique, top quality brass hardware and fixtures adorning the bags evoke a feeling of extraordinary craftsmanship. The generous travelable line is evocative of a past era of sophistication. WEK1933 bags are designed for longevity, intended to take their place among one’s most cherished collections.

Designers For Darfur

DesignersForDarfur, founded in 2007 by designer Malcolm Harris (Mal Sirrah, Inc.) and model Lydia Hearst-Shaw, in association with “FT-FashionTelevision” and Steve Madden, hosted an unprecedented charity fashion show aimed to raise funds and awareness on behalf of the Save Darfur Coalition.

For this amazing event, nearly 100 of America’s leading designers created one complete ensemble in red, yellow, green or black to be featured in a star-studded fashion show. The fashion industry’s top models, hair and make-up artists as well as wardrobe stylists donated their time, talent and assistance to show commitment and solidarity toward ending the atrocity of genocide currently taking place in Darfur.

The Fashion Show was streamed live on eBay followed by a live auction of these specially-created runway looks with 100% of all profits going directly to the Save Darfur Coalition.
